What If I Have a Lot of Product in My Hair?
Great question! Although we recommend not shampooing the day of coloring, there is an exception if you have a lot of product in your hair. While natural oils are ideal, at the same time, it’s not good to have a build-up of product that makes it harder for the color to penetrate your hair which may cause uneven results.
So, can you dye dirty hair if it's full of hairspray or dry shampoo? Not really. In this case, you may need to shampoo before coloring or adjust your styling routine in the days leading up to your appointment.
Can I Wash My Hair Before Dyeing It If I Really Need To?
If there’s a special occasion and you absolutely need to wash your hair the same day you're coloring it, it's not the end of the world. Do whatever makes you feel and look your best. Not following the "do not wash your hair" rule a couple of times won't hurt.
Why Shouldn’t You Wash Your Hair Right Before Coloring?
Okay, so you know that you don’t have to wash your hair before coloring, and we’ve more or less explained the consequences of doing so. Now, it’s time to get into the details. Why exactly you shouldn’t do it?
1. The first possible reason is that, if you suffer from scalp conditions (see dandruff vs. dry scalp), it may lead to some irritation from the color if your scalp is sensitive.
2. Apart from that, you shouldn’t wash your hair before coloring because it strips you of your natural oils, making your hair drier and more susceptible to damage or over-deposit (what colorists call "grab") of the color.
Don’t worry if you really have to wash your hair before coloring. If it happens once, there shouldn’t be any issues – but don’t make this a habit since it can lead to undesirable results more often.
